難民による警戒警備を実施する

丹羽は作家自身と5人の難民にウィーン芸術週間の展覧会「House of CHALLENGING ORDERS」のオープニング・パーティーの警備を依頼した。この3時間に及ぶパフォーマンスで、常に国家の監視と世間の詮索の対象である5人の難民を、警備員つまり監視する側の権力者に転置する。同時に、彼らの立場はさらに逆転し、警備員は高い台座の上に配置されることで、観衆から監視される対象となる。この作品では、他者を監視し、他者から監視されるとはどういうことかという根本的な問いに取り組むことにより、権力とセキュリティーとの拮抗状態を作り出す。

Providing Standing Guards by Refugees
2022, Video documentation of performance (36min 55sec)
Five refugees, as well as the artist himself, were acting as guard securities during the opening party of the Vienna Art Week exhibition “House of CHALLENGING ORDERS”. In this three-hour-iong performance, Niwa transforms the five refugees, the targets of constant state monitoring and public scrutiny, into the security personnel or rather the authority doing the monitoring. Simultaneously, their position is further inverted and the security guards become the targets to be watched, by being positioned on an elevated pedestal. With this piece, the artist addresses the fundamental question of what it means to monitor and to be monitored by others thereby challenging the status quo of authority versus security.
