2019, neon tube and table (1800 mm x 450 mm x 800 mm)
In the Japanese communication style where people repeatedly have unnecessary meetings, it’s most important to acquire a vague feeling of safety by confirming that ‘I am not the one responsible’ or ‘I am not sure about this, but we have already reached an agreement’. Because of this, it is preferred to have meetings without an essential discussion or decision making and often lead to holding boring meetings, the so-called ‘Kao-awase’, in which consensus is already reached and only obvious details are confirmed. Therefore, participants secretly try to confirm others’ opinion by reading between the lines of a vague small talk and conclude that they have reached an agreement by this confirmation. This neon work is comprised of a fluorescent yellow neon tube directly installed on a typical wood-pattern meeting table that is often used at a Japanese company and questions the audience: Is there any meaning to hold a meeting for those who are gathered there?
