1960年代以降の日本における反芸術ムーブメントの代表作家として工藤哲巳(Tetsumi Kudo)を認識したのは、学生時代に遡る。1982年生まれの僕にとっては、彼の行うハプニングと呼ばれる行為に直接立ち会う機会は当然なかったが、意識のなかに彼は伝説として常に輝いていた。展覧会オープニングで行われたという「インポ哲学」などのハプニングの記録写真を見る度に、芸術の豊かさに心躍らせたのをよく記憶している。自嘲的かつ自己批判的な彼のハプニングは、たびたび指し示す人物と指し示しめされた意味とが拮抗し、新たな思考の糸口になりうる自己矛盾を創造しようとしているように見えるからだ。工藤の1960年代のハプニング開始から半世紀ほど遅れて、2010年代に僕もパフォーマンスを用いた作品群を制作するようになるのだが、僕の制作の舞台となったのは工藤のように展覧会オープニングなどの場所ではなく、より無数のバイアスのかかった公共的かつ社会的な空間であった。そのような見えない社会的政治的な力のかかった空間においては、工藤のように自己批判を自身の身体に被せるパフォーマンスは非常に明快な思考の抜け道を作り出すことができたのだった。例えば、2011年に行ったパフォーマンス作品「デモ行進を逆走する／Walk in the Opposite Direction of a Demonstration Parade」では、震災以降の反原発デモの中を逆に歩くだけの行為なのだが、ここでは現象が二項対立によって思考停止してしまいそうな状況に対して、YesとNoに依らない新たな糸口を作り出そうと試みている。工藤が「インポ哲学/philosophy of impotence」と名付けたのも、当時の男性社会おいて勃起できない男性を敢えて仮想するこによって、自身の存在に自己批判を加えていたに違いない
When I was an art school student, I recognized him as one of artists under Anti-Art movement in Japan in 60's. As I was born in 1982, as a matter of course I never seen his happenings in personal. But he is a legend in my mind. I remember I was so excited for the potential of art every time I see his documentary photograph of his happening called "philosophy of impotence". I think the person pointing and the things are pointed opposite each others in his self‐ridicule and self‐criticism happening, also make contradiction as a trigger to re-think.
After half century after Kudo's happening in 60's, I began to make performance works. Not at opening party of exhibitions, but always in public space and political stage that are biased by so many factors. In such a space, self-critic performance like Kudo's puncture a small hole to get out of ordinary way of thinking. For example, in my performance "Walk in the Opposite Direction of a Demonstration Parade" in 2011, I just walked opposite way to the protesters of Anti-nuclear demonstration after the earth quake in Japan. In this piece, I explore how we could get thinking not depend on "Yes or No" in the situation that are in fixed thought. I guess naming his happening "philosophy of impotence" must be self-critic on him also his existence by imagining himself Impotence male under the male-dominated society at that time.
